Philip LaVerne One-Of-A-Kind Sculpture Game Table with Carved Hands 1966 (Signed) - SOLD

One-of-a-kind sculpture game table in teak with book-matched Carpathian elm top with 2 drawers on opposite sides, each with a carved articulated hand over it, by Philip LaVerne, American 1966 (signed on top “Philip LaVerne”). The sculpted tapering legs are works of art. Philip LaVerne briefly experimented using wood as a medium in 1966 .  These works from this series are extremely rare.  The craftsmanship is simply superb with dovetail construction of the drawers and hand-sculpted joinery at the corners that is second to none. Even the bottom is completely finished. This is a tour de force of design and craftsmanship.

Karl Springer was adept at taking beautiful genuine artifacts and modifying them with his own artistic touches to turn them into his own functional art. Architectural Digest issue dated January/February 1977, Karl Springer apartment is featured on the cover and inside. On the cover there is a side table similar to this one: a hand-carved bench with artisan bronze fittings and custom glass top.
