Evan Lobel

main.jpg

Large original painting "Gold Double Sun Set", acrylic and acrylic lacquer on wood panels, by Kate Shepherd, American 2007 (signed on back).

Kate Shepherd is a contemporary American artist known for her unique approach to painting. Adding threadlike lines of oil paint upon highly saturated layers of enamel, this New York artist achieves a gleaming, reflective surface, which allows the viewers to see their own reflections and also guards the intimate image from view. Born in New York in 1961, she received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY, in 1992. Her work is featured in numerous museum collections including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, New York; Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland; Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, Michigan; Des Moines Art Center, Iowa; Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California; Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Massachusetts; Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Arizona; and Seattle Art Museum, Washington.

Charles Gesmar Original Jane Pierly Poster 1925 (Signed) - SOLD

Evan Lobel

main.jpg

Framed large poster of chanteuse Jane Pierly smoking a cigarette in a fur wrap by noted artist Charles Gesmar, printed by H. Chachoin, France 1925 (signed on front). These were done in small editions and this one is considered one of his best and rarest.

Charles Gesmar (born Geismar), simply known as Gesmar, was one of the greatest designers of costumes and posters during the golden age of the Paris music hall during the Jazz Age and was primarily renowned for his work for the great Parisian star Mistinguett. Although his tenure was short, his output was prolific and his creativity and talent unrivaled at the time. Gesmar’s costumes and graphics caused as much excitement at the time as that shown a few years earlier by the elegance of Leon Bakst’s Ballets Russes. The seductive and sophisticated elegance of his art influenced generations of graphic designers and he was indisputably a bridge linking the works by other two great artists who worked for the Moulin Rouge, Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) and René Gruau (1909-2004). Gesmar allegedly died of pneumonia in February 1928, before his 28th birthday.
