Stanley Boxer Large Textural Oil on Linen 1980 (signed and dated) - SOLD
Evan Lobel
Large original oil on linen "Sensatescimbellowinghush", by Stanley Boxer (1926-2000), American 1980's (signed and dated on back by artist and original Thomas Segal Gallery label on back). Stanley Boxer was an important mid-century painter who specialized in textures and color fields. This painting has two layers: a bottom layer which has yellow, red and blue color fields; and an upper layer of texture through which the bottom layer is subtly visible. This painting is a wonderful example of his best work. Boxer had a deep love of language, particularly German, and he combined suggestive words to create unique titles which complimented his approach to painting which merged color and form. His works are in many important museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the Whitney Museum of American Art, as well as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Hirshorn Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, amongst many others. In 1975, Boxer was a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship.
