Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Rare and Important "Tao Cabinet" 1970s (Signed)

Evan Lobel

Rare and important large 4 door "Tao Cabinet" in patinated bronze and pewter with continuous engraved Chinese scene, hand-painted with vibrant enamels in green, blue, and orange, with a hand-chased bronze plinth base by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, American 1970's (signed “Philip + Kelvin LaVerne” on front). This piece retains its original gallery label on the back which is hand-signed by Philip LaVerne. There is intricate fretwork on the drawers, the interior is impeccably finished with hand-painted malachite lacquer, and the drawers and shelves are trimmed in bronze. Drawers are lined with felt. This is the largest and most impressive of the LaVernes’ cabinets. The Tao philosophy was primarily concerned with the importance of man in relation to his surroundings and architecture. The top and sides are engraved with the Kuan— interlocking circles—design which is meant to evoke something from the past.
