Gio Ponti Important Cabinet Produced by Fontana Arte ca 1939 - SOLD

Evan Lobel

Unique and important cabinet in limed oak with reverse painted glass panels designed by Gio Ponti and produced by Fontana Arte, Italy ca 1939 (stamped "FX 1285" on back).  Has 2 pull out trays and interior is lined in linoleum.  Side cabinets are illuminated.  This cabinet is extraordinary and a fine example of both Gio Ponti's and Fontana Arte's superlative work.

Acquired from the above sale by last owner.

F. Deboni, Fontana Arte:  Gio Ponti, Pietro Chiesa, Max Ingrand, Turin 2012, this piece is featured on page 175, along with a drawing of the motif shown on the doors

Ponti, Lisa Licitra, Gio Ponti, The Complete Work 1923-1978, page 226 shows the cabinet's decorative motif on the doors used as a wall mural for an entrance hall in a Mediterranean villa (from Domus).
