Paul Evans Rare and Important Sculpted Bronze Cabinet with Steel Elements 1969

Evan Lobel

Impressive and large Sculpted Bronze Cabinet with enameled steel elements and cleft slate tops by Paul Evans for Directional Furniture, American 1969. The beautifully finished interior holds four drawers finished like the exterior and two shelves which are concealed by two bifold doors. This series is very rare. This piece was created from a mixture of epoxy resin and sand applied to a plywood base and sculpted into various swirls, drips and other patterns. Once hardened, the piece was sandblasted, sprayed with an atomized bronze finish, varnished, blown with a torch to provide a smoky look, polished, and then varnished again. The resulting work has a metallic sheen but is lightweight compared with something made of cast bronze. This is a work of art by one of the most important 20th century designers.
