The workmanship on this coffee table is incredible. We have not seen anything else like it.

Coffee table "Classical Muses" in engraved and patinated bronze and pewter with painted enamels by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, American 1964 (signed). Comes with original invoice dated July 1, 1964 which states “Special table - Chan #140 shape and size - Classical Muses design”. The table featuring muses was the Classical Table which was square; this was a custom special order in this shape and size.

ALCHEMY: THE ART OF PHILIP AND KELVIN LAVERNE written by Evan Lobel with Kelvin LaVerne, published by Pointed Leaf Press in 2024, a Classical table is shown on page 110 in the section titled Historical Civilization Series. The caption reads, “The 1960s CLASSICAL table has a top of patinated bronze with engraved scenes of the Muses of dance, poetry, music and drama. The engraving is enhanced with hand-painted enamels.”

This is one of several works that explore the myth of Leda and the Swan. The green patina is meant to give the table a sense of antiquity.
