Philip & Kelvin LaVerne Exceptional Rare "Chi Liang" Coffee Table 1960s (Signed) - SOLD

Evan Lobel

Rare and important "Chi Liang" sculpture coffee table, multilevel in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter with hand-painted enamels by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960's (signed on top “Philip Kelvin LaVerne”). Chi Liang means broad mindfulness. This table was bent into shape by hand. It was done in a small edition and is simply incredible in every way. A true work of art.

Reference:
ALCHEMY: THE ART OF PHILIP AND KELVIN LAVERNE written by Evan Lobel with Kelvin LaVerne, published by Pointed Leaf Press in 2024, a CHI LIANG coffee table is shown on pages 62-63 in the section titled The Historical Civilization Series. The caption below reads, “The CHI LIANG coffee table was created in the 1960s in patinated bronze and pewter with engraving and hand-painted enamels, as described by Kelvin LaVerne: ‘The design is from a painting in China made many centuries ago. It depicts and symbolizes the Sky (representing heaven, mortality, spirituality, and the universe), the Earth (representing growth, nature, and material needs), and the River that runs through (representing fate, life, and destiny). The paintings with pastoral scenes symbolizing the religious and philosophical concepts inherent in the narrative, as well as the beauty in the artwork, is what we found so fascinating and gave us the inspiration and determination to represent these ancient Eastern civilizations and histories visually on a sculptural modern platform. The many philosophies and religions in China throughout the centuries, although similar, offered slightly different mythologies, depending on the ruling dynasty. So we created a table with a sculptural form that gives voice to all, in its dimension and shape the platforms that rise and fall in an undulating movement suggesting the uncertainties and vagaries of life. Although extremely contemporary, the form maintains the integrity of a Chinese presence.’” It is also discussed in the introduction.

Elger Esser Large Framed Photograph "Enfeh II, Lebanon" 2005 (Signed) = SOLD

Evan Lobel

Esser 350 Salt Pond 2005 1-7 photograph2 main.jpg

Large framed photograph “Morgenland” (Morning Land Series), “Enfeh II, Lebanon” by Elger Esser, German 2005. C-print on Diasec Face. Label on the back that reads (Elger Esser, Enfeh II, Lebanon 2005. 1/7 ).

Elger Esser is a German artist known for his photography of nature and the landscapes are central themes throughout Elger Esser’s photographic oeuvre. Often in muted, sepia or monochromatic colors, his works have a stillness about them that evokes a sense of the sublime. Esser’s large-format photographs typically depict European lowlands with his characteristic low horizon lines, pale luminous colors and vast skies, beaches, wetlands or seas. His skillful use of traditional processes, such as photogravure printing, gives his images an intense sharpness, depth and luminosity. Inspired by the literary works of Gustave Flaubert, Marcel Proust and Guy de Maupassant, paintings of the Romantic period, and early nineteenth-century photography. Elger Esser’s works originate from the travels he has undertaken since 1996, across France, Italy, Spain, Scotland, Ireland, the Netherlands, the USA, and Australia.

Paul Evans Important Sculpted Bronze Wall Cabinet 1969 (Signed) - SOLD

Evan Lobel

Evans 850 Deep Relief 8ft credenza88 main.jpg

Rare and important large sculpted bronze wall cabinet with enameled steel elements and 3 cleft slate top pieces by Paul Evans Studio for Direction Furniture, 1969 (signed “PE 69” on bottom). The gray steel elements set into the bronze resin are an incredible color combination. Bronze resin was created from a mixture of epoxy resin and sand applied to a plywood base and sculpted into various swirls, drips and other patterns. Once hardened, the piece was sandblasted, sprayed with an atomized bronze finish, varnished, blown with a torch to provide a smoky look, polished, and then varnished again. The resulting work has a metallic sheen but is lightweight compared with something made of cast bronze. (Photo shows wall cabinet with matching mirror, also available)
