Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Rare and Important Sculpture Dining Table 1980s (Signed) - SOLD

Magnificent and rare “Abstract #1” dining table with 2 hand-brazed abstract sculptures in patinated bronze with a thick glass top by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne, American 1980's (engraved “Philip Kelvin LaVerne” in metal and original gallery label on bottom of base). Hand-welding bronze sculptures with full curves and undulations is extremely laborious. These bases have a sense of harmony and can accommodate any size glass top.

Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Rare Pair of "Galatea" Table Lamps 1970s (Signed)

Pair of rare "Galatea" table lamps with female figures in cast bronze on patinated bronze bases by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, American 1970's (signed “PK LaVerne” on front of one base). The female figures are based on the myth of Pygmalion, a sculptor who creates an ivory alabaster statue representing his ideal woman and then falls in love with her, which he names Galatea; the goddess Venus answers his prayers and brings her to life. The pair have been newly rewired by Lobel Modern with new bronze sockets and silk cords. Lighting fittings have been professionally polished and lacquered.

The caption reads, “The 1970s GALATEA lamps include cast patinated bronze figures on patinated bronze bases. The beautiful curves of the bases complement the cast female figures perfectly. The LaVernes did several works about the myth of Pygmalion and Galatea.”

Paul Evans Important "Sculpture Front Cabinet" 1979

Rare and important “Sculpture Front Cabinet” in welded and patinated steel, color pigments, 24 karat gold leaf, painted wood with original granite top by Paul Evans, American 1979. This piece comes with the original invoice from The Paul Evans Studio showing a drawing of this piece. On the invoice it states: "No slate.  Oxidation to emphasize coloration of granite sample." It is a unique piece. Coloration is superb. This is a rare master work by Paul Evans.

Rare and large "Chan" coffee table in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter with gold and copper leaf and hand-painted enamels in orange, blue, and green by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960's (Signed twice “Philip Kelvin LaVerne” on top). The Chan coffee table was typically done round and smaller. This larger square version on a pedestal base is rare and the condition is superb.

We see peasants carrying a sacred gift to the Emperor’s child. Delicately wrought leaves and figures, combine with a rich variety of multicolored patinas to create the Chinoiserie top. The design is credited as inspiring and evoking French and English periods of furniture design.”

Handblown glass vase with overlayed murrhines by Anzolo Fuga for A.V.E.M. , Murano Italy, late 1950's.

Literature: Anzolo Fuga: Murano Glass Artist, Designs for A.V.E.M. by Rosa Barovier-Mentasti, Acanthus Press, a similar piece is illustrated on page 60.  Rosa Baoriver-Mentasti knew Fuga personally and spent 2 years researching the book with full access to the A.V.E.M. archive.  It is the definitive monograph on Fuga's work.

Provenance: Evan Lobel purchased this piece directly from A.V.E.M. in 2001 as part of a large collection of pieces stored there from the 1940’s, 1950’s and 60’s.
