Unique Impressionist painting "Caribbean" in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter with enamel cloisonne in hand-brazed braided bronze frame by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960's (signed “Philip K LaVerne” in painting - see photo). “Caribbean” is a tribute to Caribbean women who carry heavy baskets on their heads. The LaVernes were inspired by this while on a trip to St. Thomas. It’s a spectacular work of art.

Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Rare and Important "Tao Cabinet" 1970s (Signed)

Rare and important large 4 door "Tao Cabinet" in patinated bronze and pewter with continuous engraved Chinese scene, hand-painted with vibrant enamels in green, blue, and orange, with a hand-chased bronze plinth base by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, American 1970's (signed “Philip + Kelvin LaVerne” on front). This piece retains its original gallery label on the back which is hand-signed by Philip LaVerne. There is intricate fretwork on the drawers, the interior is impeccably finished with hand-painted malachite lacquer, and the drawers and shelves are trimmed in bronze. Drawers are lined with felt. This is the largest and most impressive of the LaVernes’ cabinets. The Tao philosophy was primarily concerned with the importance of man in relation to his surroundings and architecture. The top and sides are engraved with the Kuan— interlocking circles—design which is meant to evoke something from the past.

Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Rare and Important "Chine Fret" Mirror 1960s (Signed)

Exceptional and large “Chine Fret” mirror in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter with Chinese figural vignettes on all 4 sides with hand-painted enamels in green, blue, orange, and red with gold and copper leaf and hand-brazed fretwork on the top by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960's (signed in two places: “Philip Kelvin LaVerne” and “LaVerne P. Kelvin” on front). The corners of the mirror are engraved with the Kuan motif of interlocking circles. This mirror is very rare and a masterpiece of artisanship.

Rare “Kuan” mirror with repeating interlocking circles pattern in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter with subtle hand-painted enamels in blue and green by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960's. The rich patina of the bronze was attained by burying the engraved panel underground in a special soil at near freezing temperatures. This mirror exemplifies the exceptional artisanship of Philip and Kelvin LaVerne.

Anzolo Fuga Large and Exceptional Hand-Blown Glass Vase 1955-56 - SOLD

Magnificent hand-blown glass vase in white glass with translucent colorful sections and symmetrically placed rods in red, green, yellow and blue that connect the sections by Anzolo Fuga for Arte Vetraria Muranese (A.V.E.M.), Murano Italy, 1955-56. The scale and artisanship of this vase is impressive. Anzolo Fuga was the master stained glass maker on Murano and his pieces often incorporate mesmerizing colorful “windows”.

Anzolo Fuga, Murano Glass Artist by Rosa Barovier-Mentasti, Acanthus Press 2005, a general description of the Multicolor Rods and Murrine series (1955-60) is on page 41. A similar model vase can be seen in the color photograph on page 46 with the caption, “Vase with Multicolor Rods, 1955.”
Arte Vetraria Muranese - Artistic Production 1932-1972 by Marc Heiremans, Arnoldsche , on page 90 is a color photograph of a a similar model vase accompanied by the original drawing by Anzolo Fuga from the A.V.E.M. archives. The caption reads, “Anzolo Fuga, A canne, c. 1956, model 13523.“ On page 88 is a color photograph of another similar model with the caption, “Anzolo Fuga, A canne, c. 1956.”

Evan Lobel purchased this piece directly from A.V.E.M. in 2001 as part of a large collection of art glass pieces stored there from the 1940’s, 1950’s and 60’s.

Kelvin LaVerne Rare "Gladiator" Engraved Painting 1960 (Signed and Dated) - SOLD

Rare “Gladiator” painting, with victorious Roman gladiator standing over his defeated foe, in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter with enamel cloisonne by Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960 (signed and dated “Kelvin LaVerne 1960” on the back). This is one of Kelvin LaVerne’s earliest works. The background is intentionally textured to give this work extra dimension. The lion on the gladiator’s shield is a beautiful touch. This is a small masterpiece.

Philip LaVerne Unique Sweeping Sculpture Coffee Table in Wood 1966 (Signed)

Rare unique wood sculpture table, superbly hand-crafted organic sweeping and curving form in wood with bronze support element and thick customized glass top by Philip LaVerne, American 1966 (signed three times - "Philip LaVerne” engraved into the bronze support element on top and “LaVerne Studio” on a brass placard on side near bottom and engraved on top “Philip LaVerne”). In 1966 Philip LaVerne experimented with wood sculptures while Kelvin was in Europe working on sketches for new designs. Only a few of these were made. This piece is constructed of rectangular wood blocks, each cut and molded to create a continuous curvaceous form which is supremely difficult. There is a bronze element as that was the medium he was best known for working with.

Paul Evans Rare and Important "Argente" 2-Door Cabinet 1968 (Signed and Dated) - SOLD

Rare and important Argente 2 door cabinet in welded and enameled aluminum with natural cleft slate top by Paul Evans, American 1968 (signed and dated “Paul Evans 68” on bottom of right door). The interior has the original black lacquer wash. His series “Argente,” which is Latin for silver, has become especially prized in recent decades, both for its melding of technology with hand-crafted touches and the rarity of the works. The Argente Series was only in production for a few years (1965-72). This piece is finished superbly on both the exterior and interior.

The caption reads, “SYNERGY, a unique collage in patinated and engraved bronze, copper, and pewter, was created in the 1970s. Kelvin stated, “This is a work where a confluence of a variety of metals and tones, set at different angles, play against each other to create a sense of movement and composition. A circular design was added to induce a slight textural nuance that contrasts with the plain surfaces of the bronze and pewter tones of the various metals and to complete the synergistic effect I had envisioned.”
